Planning Application Fees are Increasing!

Please refer to the blog published on 14 November 2023 with updated information.

On Wednesday 26 July 2023 the Government announced that fees for major planning applications will increase by 35% on Monday 1 April 2024, with all other application fees increasing by 25%.

Application fees will then be increased annually each April, starting on 1 April 2024, using the Consumer Prices Index from the previous September with any annual fee increases capped at 10%. A fee review will also take place within three years.

Other confirmed changes include scrapping an option for applicants to submit a repeat planning application free of charge if the first attempt is withdrawn or refused.

With this in mind, if you have development proposals for which you are looking to obtain planning then you may want to consider accelerating the submission of your planning application to ensure that you are not caught having to pay the increased fees.

Whilst we appreciate that April 2024 seems a long way off, for some of the larger projects (and sometimes smaller ones too), it may be worth progressing matters now, especially factoring in the delays in obtaining pre-application advice which are currently being experienced for schemes across almost all local planning authorities (LPAs).
